0-1-2 finger chords in A

Do you remember when you first learned to play the ukulele? What was the first chord you ever learned? Second chord? Before long you are playing the 3-finger chord of G7. Why is that? To get you to quickly accompany yourself singing? Why not all the 0, 1, and 2-finger chords?

First there was none. By tuning your ukulele to G, C, E, A, you are playing the notes of the Am7 chord. With just one finger pressed on a fret, you can play A minor (Am), A7, and A7sus4. With two fingers, you can play even more chords.

Do you really need to know more than one way to play the Am chord?

The A5 chord is also known as the power chord. Notice two of the strings sound the same.

Every major, minor, diminished, and augmented chord requires only three different notes. Because there are four strings on the ukulele, we end up doubling (repeating) one of the three notes.

If you want to know more about the different kinds of chords and how they are constructed, take a class in music theory. Learn to read notes. Discuss music using the correct terminology.
