Kanikapila in Hawai’i (part 3)

In part three of this blog series, I write about getting together to play music outdoors on the beautiful island of Maui. Subtitle: making music on Maui.

Weather on Maui is indoor temperature year-round with some exceptions. There are microclimates. The higher up you go, the cooler it is. Up in Kula, it can get very cold. Go east and experience a tropical rainforest in Haiku. Go south and feel the heat. No matter how hot it gets, the trade winds make it bearable. It rains more often during the winter than the summer.

My mother’s neighbor introduced me to a weekly lunch gathering in Kahului. We ladies would plow through the Mele Aloha song book before we’d dig into a potluck lunch.
