Combinatorics was the math class that completely changed the direction of my post‑college life. Do you remember a class that did that for you? Combinatorics has everything to do with C Major Scale with Harmony – my next book in the Pick Pluck Play Series – released on Friday 23rd January 2026. It contains 24 progressive studies plus two waltzes and a bonus arrangement – Auld Lang Syne, just in time for Robert Burns Night.

At its core, combinatorics asks the simple question: “How many different ways can you…?” It’s a concept I first encountered on Sesame Street, except they never warned me it would one day lead to counting notes, chords, and musical possibilities until my brain resembled a very tired abacus.
My new book dives into all the different ways you can:
- play the C major scale (one octave up and down from middle C—no shortcuts, no roller skates)
- accompany the melody with chords—how many types, and how many ways you can play them before your fingers file a complaint
- add notes to the C major scale and still manage to go up and down without falling off the musical staircase
To actually finish this book, I had to heroically resist the urge to include the warm‑up exercises. Instead, I banished them—lovingly—into a separate book with enough tongue‑twisting titles to qualify as a vocabulary workout. That may be my fifth book as yet untitled, but also a Technique Exercise for Beginners book, to follow C Major Scale with Harmony. The seeds of (re) harmonized C major scale were sown a couple years ago and again in my Daily Music Writing Project.
Which means, naturally, my work will never, ever end. But at least I’m counting things I love.
