Following “Pick Strum C Major Scale” it’s important to learn the chromatic scale to get to know ALL the notes instead of a select few. Writing this section of the bigger “Pick Strum Scale” piece is my first venture into harmonizing the chromatic scale. Aimed at beginners, I hope it will whet their appetite to explore the entire ukulele fretboard afterwards.

The piece fits nicely on a two page PDF with two sections. The first is the chromatic scale starting on the lowest note of the high G ukulele, ascending an octave higher, employing alternating bass line with the right thumb fingerpicking and strumming the chords.
The second section is the chromatic scale – single notes using alternate right fingers of index and middle fingers as indicate by the letters i and m respectively.
Learning outcomes
The following list is not exhaustive.
- Chromatic scale from middle C to an octave higher
- chords: C, Dm, B7, E7, etc.
- Right thumb to pick and strum
- alternating bass
- Calypso or Island strum
- Chord melody
- Right hand fingerpicking technique by walking the index and middle fingers
Pick! Pluck! Play!
“Pick Strum Chromatic Scale” is at the first level of the book “Pick! Pluck! Play!” book and follows “Pick Strum C Major Scale.”
The last page “Ukulele Chords” of the new book contains a table of ukulele chord diagrams ordered alphabetically for the chords used in the book.
I’m thrilled about releasing these books as a precursors (prerequisite) to the 12 Chinese Zodiac Suite, which contains three skill levels.
I am recording all my new compositions in the 100 Days of Ukulele 2025 project. To me, this challenge means uploading a new video recording of a new piece each consecutive day from 1st March to 8th June 2025.
