Inspired by the story of a foreigner in the Netherlands
Culture Shock!

reduced vocal score

Meiyanda (alto) ponders over her decision to leave her country to study in the Netherlands, where thankfully she meets Wim (bass) who is eager to introduce his friends, especially best friend Hendrik Jan (bass) who invites them to Amsterdam. Meiyanda’s desire to fit in are sometimes opposed by her inner self (female choir). As with most foreigners, Meiyanda gets homesick, especially in the long, cold Dutch winter. Wim assures her that it takes getting used to. Upon the invitation to Amsterdam, Meiyanda looks forward to something hot and spicy, warm and juicy (but not a cold sandwich) to fill her stomach up. On the train to Amsterdam, the conductor (tenor) announces they've arrived. The passengers (choir) sing Dames en Heren (in Dutch). With all this expectation, Meiyanda and Wim arrive in the Amsterdam home of Hendrik Jan who offers them ham or cheese sandwiches.
